Pest is where Budapest’s history comes alive. For centuries, this was the stage on which the city’s life unfolded: horse-drawn carriages rushing through busy streets, market traders calling out their wares, politicians shaping the country’s future, and writers and poets gathering in grand cafés. Casinos, theatres, coffee houses and elegant boulevards became part of a city, while some of the events that took place here would shape not only Hungary, but the course of European history. Today, Pest is still the lively heart of the city. Ruin bars, cafés, restaurants, shops and bustling streets sit alongside grand historic buildings and quiet corners. And despite all the energy, Pest never feels overwhelmingly crowded. It is a clean, open and remarkably liveable part of Budapest, where history and everyday life exists side by side. HIGHLIGHTS ALONG THE WAY Depending on the duration you choose, the tour gradually includes more of Pest’s highlights, starting with the essential sights and adding further landmarks and neighbourhoods on the longer tours. We will see the Parliament, Shoes on the Danube Bank, Soviet War Memorial, St. Stephen’s Basilica, Central Market Hall, historic city walls, National Museum, Opera House, Heroes’ Square, Andrássy Avenue, Chain Bridge, City Park, Jewish Quarter and Dohány Street Synagogue. Along the way, we may also experience Budapest’s iconic public transport, including the Millennium Underground and No. 2 tram. In the Central Market Hall there is time to explore the market and shop for local products. IMPORTANT INFORMATION The tour is covering several kilometres on foot. Depending on the route, we may occasionally use public transport to move between different parts of the city. The longer tours can be quite active: on the 5-hour tour, for example, we may walk up to 10 km (around 15,000 steps). Dogs are welcome, making these tours a great option for travellers exploring Budapest with their four-legged companion. As public transport may be used, dogs should be comfortable wearing a muzzle. The advertised duration is an approximate tour length rather than a guaranteed finish time. Walking pace varies from one guest to another. If we notice during the tour that we are moving more slowly than expected, we will let you know in good time. Together, you can then decide whether to pick up the pace, shorten or adjust the route to keep within the original timeframe, or extend the tour at €20 per additional 30 minutes.
